Medical research projects

The fourth year elective provides a month-long block rotation for students interested in preventive medicine and public health, during which time students spend 50% effort on a research project that they define and the remaining 50% effort encompasses many short-term clinical segments related to this field. Translational research–often described as 'bench-to-bedside' studies–accelerates the discovery of new treatments directed at the basic mechanisms of disorder and disease and hastens the time when effective treatments become a reality.

Clinical research–such as testing a hypertension medicine in mice genetically engineered to have marfan syndrome, for instance–applies itself directly to improving the human condition. Selecting just ten of the many hundred reports is not an easy task considering the wealth of talented researchers supported by nhmrc.

Of the best research projects updated: nhmrc develops its ation for guideline al practice guidelines for guidelines, fact sheets and publications. The senior scholars program allows the student a two- to three-month opportunity to participate, in depth, in a research project.

We are building alliances in our region, including china and singapore to improve health for all behalf of the nhmrc, i thank all researchers who have contributed to these efforts to assist in improving health through evidence in the 2009-12 triennium. We are moving to develop new ways for researchers, health educators and patients to work together to benefit from research evidence.

Problems in evaluating medical informatics projects may be overcome by formulating system development work in terms of a testable hypothesis; subdividing complex projects into modules, each of which can be developed, tested and evaluated rigorously; and utilizing qualitative studies in situations where more definitive quantitative studies are : 7719785 pmcid: pmc116182 [indexed for medline] free pmc articlesharepublication type, mesh termspublication typecomparative studymesh termsevaluation studies as topiclibrariesmedical informatics*researchresearch designresearch support as topiclinkout - more resourcesfull text sourceseurope pubmed centralpubmed centralpubmed central canadaother literature sourcescos scholar universepubmed commons home. Basic research provides a fundamental understanding of molecules and mechanisms that, without offering any apparent practical avenue for patient treatment, involves identifying cellular processes and genetic mutations and revealing breakdowns in cellular communication associated with all manner of diseases and disorders–marfan syndrome, for instance.

Our researchers work, too, on ways of preventing ill health, and ways of more effectively delivering care to patients. As you will see in this edition, health and medical research is rarely the result of one individual’s effort.
